Sony Interactive Entertainment and developer Housemarque’s roguelike third-person shooter Returnal is out today on the PlayStation 5, with the eagerly anticipated release one of the first AAA exclusives to hit the console since its launch. It has proven to be a hit with critics too, with the game sitting at an 86 on MetaCritic at time of writing.
Check out the launch trailer below:
After crash-landing on this shape-shifting world, Selene must search through the barren landscape of an ancient civilization for her escape. Isolated and alone, she finds herself fighting tooth and nail for survival. Again and again, she’s defeated – forced to restart her journey every time she dies.
Through relentless roguelike gameplay, you’ll discover that just as the planet changes with every cycle, so do the items at your disposal. Every loop offers new combinations, forcing you to push your boundaries and approach combat with a different strategy each time.
Brought to life by stunning visual effects, the dark beauty of the decaying world around you is packed with explosive surprises. From high stakes, bullet hell-fuelled combat, to visceral twists and turns through stark and contrasting environments. You’ll explore, discover and fight your way through an unforgiving journey, where mystery stalks your every move.
Designed for extreme replayability, the procedural world of Returnal invites you to dust yourself off in the face of defeat and take on new, evolving challenges with every rebirth.
As mentioned, the game has received a WHOLE lot of praise so far. Check some of it out down below:

“Returnal is an excellent video game flirting with perfection. It has the most satisfying gameplay loop Housemarque has crafted to date, which says a lot considering the studio’s pedigree. If PlayStation’s other PS5 exclusives feel even half as satisfying as Returnal does, fans are in for one hell of a console generation.” (Read the full review here.)Game Spew
“Playing Returnal, it feels like next-gen has truly begun. The way it seamlessly moves from third-person to first-person; how you move from biome to biome without loading screens taking you out of the action; the DualSense implementation; the fluidity of the gameplay; the phenomenal visuals and audio; all of these elements, and more, come together to create an experience that is truly like no other. This is not only Housemarque’s best game to date, but perhaps also the best game currently available on PS5. It’s a genre-defying delight that raises the bar on so many levels. If you own a PS5 you need to play Returnal. It’s as simple as that.” (Read the full review here.)
